[about Witch Hazel]:
The branches of Hamamelis virginiana L. branch in a spiral position on the flexible branches. The whole oval leaf edge is serrated. In late autumn, the flowers bloom and cluster in the axils of leaves. The flower has four green sepals, four yellow petals, eight stamens, two single stamens and one embryo. The fruit is a small pod with the base enclosed in the calyx.

Hamamelis deciduous shrub or small tree, up to 8m high; branchlets with stellate hairs when young. Leaves alternate; petiole is 6-10 mm long, tomentose; stipules fall early; leaves are paper-based, wide obovate, 6-12 cm long, 3-7.5 cm wide, apex short and sharp, base heart-shaped, edge wavy teeth, light green above, short hair, dense gray star like villi below, side veins 7-9 pairs. Short spikes axillary, with several flowers; flowers bisexual; calyx short, calyx teeth 4, persistent, stellate hair; petals 4, yellow white, banded, about 1.5cm long; stamens 4, alternate with staminodes; ovary nearly superior, 2-locular, style 2, 1-1.5mm long, separated. Capsule ovoid, 1.2cm long and 1cm wide, densely covered with yellow brown stellate hairs. Seeds elliptic, about 8mm long, black, shiny. Flowering may, fruit ripening October.
